Mountain Rail Moves Toward First Passenger Service in November

Colorado’s long-discussed Mountain Rail project is officially picking up speed. Phase 1 passenger service is currently targeted to launch in November, marking a major milestone in expanding rail access between Colorado’s Front Range and its mountain communities.

The initial service will focus on establishing a reliable, scenic rail connection from Denver to Granby, creating a year-round transportation option that offers both convenience and breathtaking views. Once operational, the rail line is expected to provide an appealing alternative to driving, especially during peak travel seasons when traffic congestion along I-70 can become a major challenge.

A New Way to Reach the Mountains

Unlike many new transit projects, Mountain Rail’s early phase will build on existing rail infrastructure, allowing passenger service to launch sooner while larger expansions are planned. Riders can expect a smoother, less stressful way to reach popular mountain destinations - without worrying about weather-related driving conditions, road closures, or weekend gridlock.

Long-Term Expansion Plans

While Phase 1 focuses on the Denver-to-Granby corridor, the long-term vision for Mountain Rail stretches much farther. Future expansions are planned to connect additional mountain destinations, including Winter Park, Steamboat Springs, Craig, and Hayden. These connections aim to strengthen regional mobility, support local economies, and make mountain living and tourism more accessible year-round.

Why It Matters

Beyond convenience, the Mountain Rail project represents a meaningful step toward reducing highway congestion, improving sustainability, and offering residents and visitors a safer, more enjoyable way to travel through Colorado’s high country. For mountain communities, increased accessibility could translate into stronger tourism, expanded workforce mobility, and long-term economic growth.

As November approaches, Mountain Rail is shaping up to be more than just a transportation upgrade—it’s the beginning of a new chapter in how Coloradans experience the mountains. 🚆🏔️
